KENTWOOD DISTRICT

The Kentwood District Kentwo10

Current Status: A few months ago, a Syndicate War took place here in which The Dead Dragons, one of the oldest and most respected Syndicates in the city, sought to remove their rival Syndicate, The Midnight Rage, from the city. The actual reason for the start of this conflict remains a mystery. The fighting started in the Dead Dragon's Headquarters in Onawai, but The Midnight Rage were pushed back into their own turf, which they failed to defend. The Midnight Rage were eventually run down and killed; very few of them now remain. The Dead Dragons respected the balance of power in the city and chose not to take over Kentwood District as a part of their holdings. Accordingly, no Syndicate currently operates in this district, leaving hundreds of gangs trying to fill that void. There is an upcoming election in Kentwood, as the beloved former Mayor Samuel Crevcore was forced to resign due to health reasons.

SUMMARY

Those who are well off enough to find a home in the Kentwood District live a good life - by today's standards.

Kentwood resembles the cities of the past and a 21st century denizen would feel quite at home in the streets Tightly packed with row after row of apartment buildings, sprinkled with bars and hangouts, and anchored by both local shopping areas and high-rise business blocks. Kentwood enjoys the title of broadest socioeconomic range, butting up against the Slums to the east, and Bluefield to the north. Kentwood pays the price for its success, however; heavily armed police squads patrol the roads in armored personnel carriers, constantly watching for any signs of gang violence. After the fall of the The Midnight Rage Syndicate, hundreds of local gangs took up arms, each trying to fill the power vacuum left by the fall of their largest crime organization. Checkpoints and random searches are commonplace, and the residents of Kentwood find themselves resigned to the necessity for security passes and identity cards as they go about their daily routines.

Kentwood most resembles the cities of the Earth that was, and is one of the few remaining sections of the city that remain from Old San Francisco. On one street, you might walk down a row of small, worn brownstones; the next, you find yourself in the shadow of vast skyscrapers, the sky further broken by skyways weaving through the city on multiple levels. Though more modern technological additions intersperse the traditional concrete, steel, and glass construction, its roots remain clear, and high-rise towers reminiscent of old human cities saturate the district. In recent years, Kentwood has played host to major regime change. Four different Syndicates have controlled the district in the past 50 years. Nowadays, Kentwood is host to more gangs than any other district, each one vying for a chance to become the next Syndicate. Accordingly, police and military activity is high in this district, and security checkpoints are common sights in Kentwood life.

CULTURE

Kentwood enjoys a spot of notoriety as the most diverse district in the city. A handful of business districts bustle throughout the region, while residential areas range from massive mixed-use high rises, to more understated brick apartments. Visible technology varies widely, with some regions displaying state-of-the-art holographic signage, while others make do with more traditional hand-painted plywood and printed plastic. Wealth varies wildly as well, with the richest residents clustering around the north end, near the bridge access to Bluefield, or else ringing the various business districts scattered throughout Kentwood. The constant struggle with organized crime and the associated violence defines the district, though, resulting in a particular focus on security and surveillance throughout the region. This has given rise to the citizenry's brutally (and often lethally) practical nature. Though such a massive population can't possibly be described in generalizations, the prevailing stereotype describes a normal Kentwood resident as a particularly cautious, practical, and very direct individual with a weapon, and no qualms about using it. Faith and participation in the government is higher here, due to the extremely effective political flair of the retired Mayor, Samuel Crevcore.

THE POLICE

Kentwood Police has recently been subsumed by its own special tactics division, and now operates as the Kentwood Internal Security Forces. This change came gradually, pressed forward by consistently-increasing rates of gang violence in the district. As gang armories continue to escalate, demand for Police Special Tactics squads continued to follow, eventually reaching the point where normal uniformed officers have become obsolete. During one of Crevcore's reorganizations, Kentwood PD transformed into Kentwood ISF, replacing all patrol vehicles with military-grade armored carriers and hover birds over the course of mere weeks. All officers now patrol in fire teams of four, and must wear heavy body armor and helmets at all times, and carry assault rifles, shotguns, and other full-size weapons in addition to their service pistol. Considering how thinly stretched their forces are, the ISF are brutally efficient at protecting the citizens and resources of the district. Kentwood ISF is unique in that it has eliminated all demographic barriers to entry in a desperate attempt to bring its force up to full strength. However, they still maintain stringent physical and mental requirements for their cadets, accepting only the best in an effort to maximize effectiveness.

The military also operates within Kentwood District, supplementing ISF firepower with the full might of the Sanctum military at key checkpoints and in certain high-profile neighborhoods.

MAJOR LOCATIONS
The Commons - A large outdoor mall in the center of Kentwood. There are no weapons allowed in this family oriented collection of shops. If you're looking for something that is used to kill somebody, go somewhere else. The Commons was built to be a safe haven from the chaos of the outside world where a family could forget their troubles by buying everyone a new toy.

The Museum of Mankind - In search of all that remains of Old Earth. The collectors sought to find old museums, long buried in the dirt and excavate what treasures they could find to display and keep for the generations to come. The Museum is always looking for new items to display and will reward the finder greatly. Find an old book? a coke bottle? a famous street sign? All of it is now considered a lost treasure. Much like how remains of Ancient Civilizations were dug up and put on display - anything that remains of the Earth that Humans left behind is of great interest.

sinners & SAINTS - S&S is a shop that is nearly as old as InterCity itself. It has had many different owners and had many different names, but its location and purpose has never changed. Whether you're a traveling gunman or a local street punk looking to find that first firearm, this is your first stop. It is rumored that the owner of the shop, Conrad McCray is a descendant of one of the first three Gunslingers.

Wacker Brothers Studios - One of the few remaining film & television production companies in the city. Sometimes they are forced to do propaganda films for the government. And the rest of the time they just dump out generic cop dramas. Their most popular show on television at the moment is called InterCity Nights and it revolves around a half-elf female detective who hunts down serial killers and she also moonlights as a stripper.

Knockers - A run down strip club on the edge of the district that caters to the very small, but very enthusiastic fans of Orc Strippers. Half the fun is guessing if they really are an Orc woman or a very large and ugly human woman. Its location moves from time to time as the city usually bans them because of the strange crowd their shows draw.

Evorizon Food - If you're eating something right now. Chances are it, it came from Evorizon Food. One of the mega-corporations that grew from the chaos after Second Cataclysm brought by the fusion of the third world. Evorizon's HQ is in Kentwood and nearly every family in the city has someone that works for them in some way. They distribute food to nearly all fast food outlets in the city and several grocery stores. They have deals with several farms outside the city: from Novard to The Goriath Wildlands. They break down the food into basic elements, use magic and chemicals to reform it into whatever they wish. Turning one corn cob into something that will feed a dozen people. Nobody is quite sure how they do this, but nobody seems to care right now. Because their OrcNuggets are delicious and nobody has gotten cancer.. yet.
